Step back to 1471, the year of the Battle of Tewkesbury. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is the largest medieval festival in Europe. Around 2000 re-enactors stage a spectacular battle when the crown of England was lost and won outside this small market town. You’ll see the camp followers living as an army on the move in the living history camp. There’s a medieval market supplying everything needed to recreate a medieval lifestyle, from armour to an eating knife. There will be entertainment throughout the day with jugglers, falconry, displays of combat and jousting. Evening events in Tewkesbury begin at 7pm on Saturday when the jubilant crowds cheer the axeman beheading the defeated commanders, after which The Abbey hosts a candlelit service sung by ‘monks’ followed by the spectacular fire theatre show. It’s a great day out for all the family and admission is free. |
